General research interests: Historic Textiles with ethnic work, particularly of the Indian Sub-Continent; Education in the Crafts; Contemporary Embroidery.

1983—Study visit to Vindolanda for Roman sewing methods on Textiles.

1985—Pasold Research Fund Award: Study tour of Germany and Switzerland, Museums and Collections: study of origins and development of embroidery stitches.

1985-86—Ashmolean Museum, Antiquities Department, Oxford: study of Coptic embroideries.

1987—Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford: study of Egyptian packet beads.

1986-87—Secondment to ZSK; multi-head embroidery machine manufacturers, Krefeld, Germany. Industry sponsored.

1987—Secondment to D’Enseignement Professionnel de Paris; study of tambour work processes for couture workshops.

1989-92—African embroidery, collections and Museums in the UK.

1993- 2008—Embroidery Techniques: Technical Structures. Embroidery Terminology.

1994-to date—The embroidery of the Toda tribe, Nilgiri Hills, India.

2003 –to date—The use of the bolster and seating in India.
